The Terranova (Latin for "New Earth") screen saver
creates images of planets, star fields, and clouds
by "fractal forgery".

Complete documentation for this screen saver is available
on the World-Wide Web at:

    http://www.fourmilab.ch/terranova/saver/

C source code may also be downloaded from the above page.

The algorithms used to generate the images are described
in the book:

Peitgen, H.-O. and D. Saupe. The Science of Fractal
        Images. New York: Springer-Verlag, 1988.
        ISBN 0-387-96608-0.

Parameters for each image are chosen at random between
the limits specified in the Advanced Configuration
dialogue; adjust these limits to produce images you
prefer. The "Mesh Size" parameter controls the amount
of detail in the image: warning--large mesh sizes increase
image generation time and memory requirements, possibly
to the detriment of other programs running while the
screen saver is active. If you mess something up, use
the Reset Defaults button in Advanced Configuration to
get back to reasonable settings. Trick: you can set
the minimum number of star clusters negative--if you set
the star cluster minimum to -8 and the maximum to 1, only
one image in 10 will contain a star cluster.

A variety of other Windows screen savers and programs
related to astronomy and space are available from the
